Visual Weather

What is visual weather?

Visual weather is a way of presenting weather conditions through imagery, animation or video alongside conventional information such as temperature, conditions and forecasts.

WeatherFlo uses cinematic visual content that responds to current conditions, allowing weather to be experienced visually rather than represented only through numbers, charts and icons.

Weather doesn't have to be only an icon

A conventional weather app might tell you:

21°

Partly cloudy

30% chance of rain

Those are useful pieces of information. But they don't necessarily communicate what being somewhere feels like right now. Weather changes light, atmosphere, colour and the character of a place. Visual weather adds that dimension to the information.

What is cinematic weather?

Cinematic weather uses moving visual content to represent weather conditions.

There are different ways of doing this. A weather product might use animation, generated scenes, generic footage or imagery connected to a particular place.

WeatherFlo's approach uses cinematic visual content mapped to current weather conditions.

How does WeatherFlo turn weather into a visual experience?

  • Current conditions
  • Weather state
  • Appropriate visual

WeatherFlo maps current conditions across 18 weather states:

  • 9 daytime conditions
  • 9 nighttime conditions

This allows both weather and time of day to influence the visual experience. WeatherFlo does not use the same visual for every condition.

Video weather and animated weather aren't necessarily the same thing

Video weather uses filmed or produced moving pictures. Animated weather uses illustrated or generated motion. Either can be generic, or connected to a particular place.

Generic visual weather

What does rain look like?

Location-specific visual weather

What does this place feel like in the rain?

Is visual weather just decorative?

Numbers communicate precision. Visuals communicate context and atmosphere. WeatherFlo combines them rather than replacing one with the other.

The visual layer is not a substitute for temperature, conditions or forecasts. It is the difference between reading the weather and having a sense of what the weather is doing.

Does WeatherFlo still provide forecasts?

Yes. The visual experience represents current conditions. The forecast tells you what is expected later. WeatherFlo does not generate a separate cinematic future-weather video for every forecast hour.

  • 8-day forecast
  • Detailed 24-hour forecast
  • Detailed 48-hour forecast

The 8-day view helps with the week ahead. The 24- and 48-hour detail is for the hours immediately in front of you.

Does visual weather replace radar?

No. WeatherFlo is not a specialist severe-weather or radar tool. When you need storm tracking, advanced radar or meteorological analysis, a specialist product is the more appropriate choice. WeatherFlo focuses on useful weather information together with a visual experience of current conditions.

Can visual weather represent a real place?

Yes. Instead of showing the same generic weather imagery everywhere, WeatherFlo can associate cinematic content with a particular location or Point of Interest. That is how a place becomes part of the weather experience.

Questions

Visual weather, more briefly

What is a visual weather app?

A visual weather app presents current conditions through imagery, animation or video as well as conventional weather information such as temperature and forecasts.

Are there weather apps that use video?

Yes. Some weather products use video or animation to represent conditions. WeatherFlo's approach maps cinematic visual content to current weather, including separate daytime and nighttime states.

How many weather states does WeatherFlo visually represent?

Eighteen: nine daytime conditions and nine nighttime conditions.

Does WeatherFlo video show forecast weather?

No. The cinematic content represents current conditions. Forecast information is provided separately.

Why have separate day and night visuals?

The same weather type does not look the same after dark. Separate day and night states let both the condition and the time of day shape what you see.

See weather, not only read it.

WeatherFlo keeps the forecast and adds a visual layer for what conditions are doing right now.
